The Canadian Housing and Renewal Association’s strategic plan resulted from a collaborative process led by SHS, which involved the CHRA Board of Directors, staff, and over 70 members from across Canada.

Objective

CHRA aimed to implement a systemic and future-oriented approach to strategic planning. The SHS team embarked on a collaborative, creative process, employing strategic foresight methods, to develop a strategic plan that leveraged CHRA’s unique strengths in the housing sector—its “superpowers” or what the organization excels at.

Activities

The strategic planning activities included:

  • Trend scanning and SWOT analysis to identify some of the most critical and uncertain signals and trends of change on our horizon that have great implications for the organization
  • Hosting CHRA member surveys and focus groups to learn about their visions for the future of CHRA
  • Developing a new vision and mission to guide the organization
  • Hosting a board retreat to build future scenarios and test strategies against an evolving housing landscape

At SHS we acknowledge the lands we are on are the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples and are now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that the location of our office in Toronto is covered by Treaty 13. In our work, we strive to continually reflect on our relationship to the land we are currently inhabiting and how our role as actors in the housing system can support the reconciliation process.
