Over the course of four Solutions Lab projects, SHS served as a solutions lab consultant to the Governments of Yukon, Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia. We guided local leaders through an interactive process to design a new Canada Housing Benefit for each province and territory.

Objective

The SHS team was tasked with bringing together representatives from local housing corporations, Provincial/Territorial governments, Indigenous representatives, community-based organizations, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, municipal representatives, and people with lived experience to design this new housing program.

Activities

The SHS team and solutions lab participants followed a design and innovation approach, incorporating the principles of human-centred design and systems thinking to frame new problems that the CHB could solve.

By employing design-led approaches and tools, this project focused on facilitating multi-stakeholder events and developing the program components, eligibility criteria, and focus of a new Canada Housing Benefit (CHB) tailored to the unique challenges faced by households in each province and territory.

At SHS we acknowledge the lands we are on are the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples and are now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We also acknowledge that the location of our office in Toronto is covered by Treaty 13. In our work, we strive to continually reflect on our relationship to the land we are currently inhabiting and how our role as actors in the housing system can support the reconciliation process.
